Stain Removers

How to remove stains from carpet

No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. Though it can be daunting to see that glass of chardonnay make the first splash on a cream Berber carpet, have no fear, it can be removed. There are many products and carpet stain removers available to help you tackle spills.

Natural Carpet Stain Removers

An effective natural ink stain remover is rubbing alcohol. Apply the rubbing alcohol to the ink stain and let it set for 30 minutes. After that time has elapsed, pad the area dry with a clean rag or paper towel. If regular rubbing alcohol doesn’t lift the ink stain, ask your pharmacist for denatured alcohol.

Another household product that can be used as a carpet stain remover is baking soda. Start by dampening a sponge with warm water. Then sprinkle baking soda over the stained area of the carpet. After about 30 minutes, scrub the area with wet sponge until the stain is gone. This method can remove any type of stain, but works best if used as a pet stain remover.

These next ingredients could be used in a cocktail, but are most effective for lifting the infamous wine stain. Start by putting salt on the stained area. Take a sponge and dampen it with club soda, and then apply it to the red wine stain. Leave the sponge on the salt and stain for about 45 minutes and then use a wet towel to rub the stain out.

Preventing a Permanent Carpet Stain

Attend to the carpet stain right away to make sure you can remove it as thoroughly as possible. Use a white cloth or paper towel to blot the stain. You want to push gently and to avoid pushing the stain in deeper. If you don’t have a carpet-cleaning product on hand, club soda will prevent the stain from setting and permanently ruining the carpeted area. If the stain is dry when you find it, use a knife to scrape out as much residue as possible before treating the area.

If these home remedy stain removal methods don’t do the trick, you may have to use a steam cleaner on your carpet or call in a professional.
