Bagless Vacuums

Vacuum bags vs. bagless systems

After spending hours searching for the right vacuum bags, you find out they were discontinued. Or, you do find the elusive vacuum bags only to bring them home, pry off the existing bag and somehow spill all the dirt and debris you spent hours sucking up all over the floor again. Does that sound familiar? If so, you are not alone, and it might be time to consider switching to an easier system: the bagless vacuum.

If you do decide to switch to a bagless vacuum, just remember that it is not entirely maintenance free. The bagless system relies on filters and rubber gaskets to keep the dirt from escaping. These seals need to be clean and free of dust to maintain a proper leakproof seal against the container. If these rubber gaskets and seals wear out or flatten over time, you will need to replace them; otherwise, dirt and dust may leak back into the air from your vacuum cleaner.

Clean Throughout the House with Central Vacuums

Central vacuums are a permanent solution to the vacuum bag dilemma. While they generally cost more than a high-end canister bagless vacuum model, a central vacuum system can increase the resale cost of your home by up to $2,000. Not to mention, carrying the light and pliable hose upstairs is significantly easier than lugging a weighty canister vacuum.

The large central vacuum canister where the dust and debris is collected only needs to be changed a couple of times a year. It is best placed in a garage or an unfinished basement to keep it out of the way and to avoid loosing a dirt cloud into your home during these changes.

Sizing Up the Bagless Bissell Vacuum

Weighing in at 17 pounds, the Bissell bagless vacuum—or more specifically, the Bissell Powerforce Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner—is a sucker, in a good way! Its easy-to-assemble design and three-stage filtration system, coupled with a strong 12-amp motor, make it a cleaning crusader. It comes complete with an assortment of attachments to tackle drapes, upholstery stairs and the like. Keep in mind that this bagless canister vacuum will need some love and care to keep it running smoothly. Wash the canister and filters regularly with warm, soapy water to increase longevity.

Although not an entirely maintenance-free option, bagless vacuums do take much of the hassle out of cleaning. No more searching for the right bag and worrying that the full one will accidentally rip when you try to remove it. Canisters are sturdy, leakproof and easily emptied into the garbage when full. They’re also better for the environment, both in and outside of your home!
